The Great Peninsula Future Festival is a public service event held annually by Sustainable Kitsap, an all-volunteer nonprofit (501c3) community service organization.
In 2007, some 60 Kitsap community leaders spent a weekend brainstorming on ways to lead Kitsap County toward a more sustainable future. Participants included mayors, state legislators and county commissioners, as well as the directors of many leading Kitsap community service organizations.
Impressed with the level of interest, Kitsap County Commissioner Steve Bauer wanted to find ways to involve the larger community in an ongoing conversation about sustainability. He invited the others to join him in creating an annual sustainability festival. Dozens took up the challenge.
The plan was to bring citizens, educators, environmentalists and civic leaders together in an atmosphere of fun to help their communities move toward a more sustainable future.
Headline entertainers and live music offer a festive backdrop for more than a hundred exhibits, showcasing green technology, green products and hands-on workshops.
The festival has caught the imaginations of many, including businesses, entrepreneurs and environmental leaders. Dozens of major sponsors have helped fund the effort. Those who’ve attended have been lavish in their praise. Families find lots to love about these annual events, and keep coming back for more.
