There are many good reasons to buy local. To begin with, it keeps money in your community. That helps small business owners expand, which means more local jobs for you, your friends, and your family.
Buying local also allows you to know, first-hand, where your food and crafts are coming from. You can visit local farms and artisans and see the produce or fruit growing and products being created. You can talk to the people
who grow or create the products and find out what goes in 
to what you purchase.
Many industries in other countries are not as carefully regulated as they are here, so it’s important to know where your products come from and what goes into them – especially your food! In many European countries only 2% of the population gets sick from food-borne contaminants because their citizens buy more of their food locally and from smaller growers. In the US it is 25% of the population that gets sick from food-borne contaminants. The gains in health and nutrition from locally grown produce are well recognized.
It’s not easy for local artisans, businesses, and farmers to compete with large national and international box stores who get their merchandise from countries that do not have the same safety standards for the products or the environment as we do here.
Buying local encourages and supports their efforts. Purchasing goods produced closer to home also reduces the fuel costs wasted in transporting goods from distant points around the globe. Buying local helps cut hidden costs to our environment and our local economies. Buying locally grown and produced products is a long-term investment in a healthier community for you, your friends, and your family.
